Ever since I began studying Film and Television Production when I was in high-school (early 1980s), I have dreamed of collaborating with other artists in the production of a film. During my career as a student and as a Commercial Artist, I have met many excellent artists in all of the creative-disciplines. I have always thought that it would be great if I had enough money in order to pay these people so that we could form a production-company and create art.

While I have, occasionally, been able to pay artists small amounts of money to work with me on my projects, the overwhelming majority of my “production-staff” is my network of Sony HD camcorders and Macintosh & Windows computers and software. I employ Final Draft for scriptwriting, FrameForge for storyboards, Carl Zeiss Sony Handycams for image-acquisition, Adobe PhotoShop & Illustrator for image-manipulation, Cinema 4d and Anim8or for CGI, GarageBand for music-creation, SoundTrack Pro for surround-sound mixing, Final Cut Pro for assembly, and DVD Studio Pro for output. There are also many other software packages for visual-effects, sound-effects, etc. This “movie-studio-in-a-box” era provides independent-artists with possibilities and opportunities that simply did not exist during the days of Super-8.

If an independent-artist is patient and persistent, then the digital-age will allow him/her to become competent in all areas of filmmaking, so that when the opportunity arises to direct and/or produce a big-budget film in which some of the work will be outsourced, he/she will be well-prepared.
